Had an initial interview for a job I would like to have for my next one. Yah know, get out of my existing gig and into something new. Just HR reaching out, if all goes well would talk to the actual hiring people next week.

Company seemed cool. Tiny, tiny office but growing.

Post whiskey and cars .

For your time

What is “aged at sea” supposed to do?

In constantly churns in the barrel, so you get a more uniform exposure of the bourbon to the barrel. Smoother, deeper flavor as a result.

It also makes it moderately expensive.

means it floats on water

otherwise it would have died at sea

It’s also supposed to help accelerate the aging process.

Brief primer, if you’re not familiar, they put the casks in a ventilated cargo container that rides on the deck of a cargo ship, and sail it around for a while (like a year or something).

In addition to being churned, the salty sea air supposed to be absorbed by the wood and slowly over time transfer to the bourbon. T he route the ship takes and the weather conditions it encounters can have an effect on the bourbon.

I had one bottle, it was delicious, but I’m not enough of a connoisseur to judge. But according to people who are really into this stuff, each batch, or “Voyage” is distinctly different in flavor profile.  Apparently 1 was incredible, 2 was very good, 3-5 were meh, 6 was rather good (what I had) and then I kind of stopped tracking it after that.

Congrats.

Out of curiosity, what ever happened to NZ? Didn’t work out or did you decide that wasn’t the right move for you?

Also, what Voyage is that?  I had a bottle of Voyage 6 that was quite good.

They also buy the bourbon. I don’t think it is their own malt. That affects it as well.

It all tastes good to me.

I wasn’t aware of that.

I’m not a super picky drinker, so I probably wouldn’t look down my nose at any of the Jefferson’s Oceans.

Maybe tonight will be a whisky night.

Huh. So my next question is if companies typically agitate their barrels in land based operations?

Thanks. I didn’t know that was a thing.

Welcome. I think it’s one of those things that’s equal parts real and gimmicky. It does change the flavor of the bourbon, but it also sounds really cool and got me to buy a bottle.

Was it good? Yes

Was it different? I think so

Was it worth it? Eh, debatable

Wow, learn something new everyday.

How much whiskey do you think is out there aimlessly sailing around the world at any given moment?

Every so often they get rotated. Not nearly as much as on a ship though.

The only one I’m aware of (aside from the usual rotating mentioned by Future next gen s2000 owner ) is Metallica’s whiskey Blackened . They blast music at the barrels. Not sure if they’re still making it though as their distiller Dave The Legend Pickerell died last year.

Aimlessly? Not much. I imagine at any given time this distillery has 1 to 2 ships with product onboard. They are the only one I know of doing something like this. I don’t know how many containers they ship at a time, I imagine it’s a small number - like 5 or less.

Now there are a lot of ships carrying scotch and whisky purposely traveling back and forth.

Perhaps aimlessly was the wrong word - leisurely I guess? Just not going to/from one port to another for the purpose of sale.

I know what you meant.  Like I said, I don’t really know for sure but I don’t think it’s much.

Honestly, I didn’t see that much depth. I’ll try again tonight.

Lately I have been impressed with R ie ger’s Kansas City Whiskey. Under $40 and good notes of vanilla and caramel.
